GMO Foods and Auto Immune Diseases – Celiac Disease

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine called on our physicians to educate the medical community, their patients and public to avoid consuming genetically modified (GM) foods, whenever possible. They have also requested that physicians provide their patients with educational materials related to GM food and their health risks. According to the AAEM, several of the animal studies that have been done indicate that there are serious health risks associated with the consumption of genetically modified food. These risks include:

Auto immune diseases
Infertility
Accelerated aging
Changes in the gastrointestinal system and major body organs
Insulin regulation
The strong association and consistency between disease and GM foods has been confirmed in numerous animal studies.

According to Dr. Amy Dean, an internal medicine specialist in Michigan and member of the AAEM board, physicians are increasingly prescribing diets free of genetically modified foods. Dr. John Boyles, an Ohio allergist, states that he strongly recommends that his patients only eat foods that are non-genetically tailored.

GMO Food Dangers

The study led by Robert Anderson, a gastroenterologist at the medical research facility Walter & Eliza Hall Institute in Australia found that three proteins (peptides) cause the gluten intolerance that is seen in those with celiac disease.

This study found that these three proteins are linked to almost all the systems in the body. These proteins inflame our cells, disrupt cell communications and distort our immune system.

The Problem Proteins

The proteins causing the problems are:

g-3 hordein, which is barley
w-5 gliadin, also known as wheat
g secalins, which is rye
The problem proteins have been proven to cause individuals to suffer allergic reactions from gluten grains.

Many of the grains we consume today are genetically modified. This modification took place in 1986 when seeds were modified to make them hardier. Then in 1996, GMO plants for commercial use were approved by the U.S. and Canada. Today’s genetically modified plants were created to be resistant to the pesticides used to kill the weeds.

These GMO cultivated crops feed the animals we consume. Our grains and produce are also affected. The main crops associated with GMO include:

Corn
Wheat
Soy
Cotton
Corn grown in the United States has the highest percentage of GMO crops. Corn is used in the majority of the packaged foods we purchase because it is an inexpensive commodity.

According to BioAcoustic Biology, the genetically modified seeds are linked to celiac disease (gluten intolerance) and numerous other health conditions and auto immune diseases.

These GMO grains have two substances that alter the way the body processes the sulfur rich amino acids, glutamine and proline. These disturbances cause our bodies to be unable to process heavy metals, regulate protein function and regulate genes.

The research showed that the distortion of glutamine is the most destructive. Our bodies need glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) to metabolize glutamine. GAD is the most prevalent neurotransmitter in our vertebrate nervous system. In mammals, there are two kinds of GAD:

GAD1, which affects the brain
GAD2, affecting the brain and pancreas
They discovered that once these GAD genes are activated, tiny transmitters (nanotransmitters) combined with the GAD metabolism, demonstrated a direct association to celiac disease and many other conditions. Celiac disease is a condition where an individual suffers gluten intolerance. It makes one’s digestive system unable to break down fat. Symptoms of this condition include abdominal distention, anemia, malnutrition and diarrhea. Individuals, who have this disease, have to eat a special diet. This diet requires that the all food is gluten grain free. These gluten grains include wheat, barley, oats and rye.

Most Americans Support Labeling GM Food

Consumers are beginning to request that the genetically modified foods have labels informing them that it is a GM food. In fact, some of the manufacturers and retailers are voluntarily labeling their foods. Several of the governments abroad have made such labeling mandatory. Labeling should not be a substitution for safety, each food that is genetically modified must be safe.

The FDA needs to define the term biotechnology-free. This would allow the marketers of foods meeting this definition to make labels claiming that there foods are biotechnology-free. It should be mandatory that foods containing GM ingredients disclose this information on their labels. Allergens should also be listed. Taking steps to ensure consumers are not misled concerning the safety of the food they are purchasing is essential.

Our government needs to take control of this problem and do something to stop our food from making us sick. Writing to your senator and asking him to address all the GMO food dangers in our nation is a great way to make sure your voice is heard.

    Great article. Thank you for posting that study. My son has PANDAS. He also has a bunch of food allergies and sensitivities. Is there anyone studying the link between GMOs and PANDAS? I guess it all overlaps, anyway.
    Shame, for this generation of children. The enormous scale of the GMO effects is not being publicized, and it should be. I bet it is affecting MS, too.
    We have to spread the word!
