Dera Bassi News: Stray Dogs Spark Major Chaos in Mubarakpur Road’s Bela Homes Society, Police Intervene
In Dera Bassi’s Bela Homes Society, a major uproar occurred on Thursday over stray dogs. The trouble started when a woman was bitten by a stray dog on Wednesday, leading the society’s residents to call for dog catchers. This action angered some residents who called in animal welfare activists, escalating the tension.
To defuse the situation, police summoned both parties to the station and began an investigation. Residents allege that the society, located by the roadside, lacks basic amenities due to the builder’s negligence, including a proper boundary wall for security. This allows stray animals to roam freely, contributing to the stray dog problem.
Residents claim these dogs often attack people, with a recent incident involving a dog chasing a small child, which was only averted by nearby women. Despite multiple complaints to the municipal office, no action has been taken. Frustrated, the residents called in a dog-catching team to relocate the strays to a place where they could be fed and taken care of. However, an activist team arrived and chased away the dog catchers, leading to a confrontation and a tense atmosphere.
Residents accuse the animal protection group of opposing the capture of stray dogs but remaining silent when people or children are bitten. They also allege mistreatment by the activists. Meanwhile, the activist team claims all the dogs have been sterilized and that they were summoned by a call from the society. They refused to provide their details, stating no one has the right to relocate the dogs.
Police officer Chamkaur Singh stated that both parties have been called to the station for statements, and appropriate action will be taken following the investigation.
